Rice is the most important staple food crop, mainly grown in eastern and southern states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Kerala, and Chhattisgarh.
Wheat requires a cool growing season, bright sunshine, moderate rainfall (50–75 cm), and well-drained fertile loamy and clayey soils.
Basmati rice (Punjab, Haryana) and Sona Masuri (Andhra Pradesh) are two major varieties.
Uttar Pradesh (largest producer), Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat.
Millets are coarse grains that are nutritious and drought-resistant. Examples: Jowar (Maharashtra, Karnataka), Bajra (Rajasthan, Gujarat).
Pulses are major protein sources for vegetarians and help improve soil fertility by nitrogen fixation. Major crops: Gram (Madhya Pradesh), Arhar/Tur (Maharashtra).
Cotton requires high temperature (21–30°C), light rainfall (50–90 cm), and black soil (regur).
Jute is called the ‘Golden Fibre’, used for making gunny bags, ropes, carpets, etc. Major producing state is West Bengal.
Coffee is mainly cultivated in Karnataka (largest producer), Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. India is known for its high-quality Arabica coffee.

India is called the ‘Land of Spices’ due to its vast production of aromatic spices. Black pepper (Kerala), Chilli (Andhra Pradesh).
Kerala is the leading producer. Rubber requires hot, humid climate, heavy rainfall (more than 200 cm), and well-drained laterite soil.
Cotton and Jute are examples because they are grown for sale and industrial use, not mainly for food.
Tea: Assam (Assam tea); Coffee: Karnataka.
Sugarcane is also used to make gur (jaggery) and khandsari.
High temperature (above 25°C), high humidity, and annual rainfall above 100 cm.
Horticultural crops include fruits, vegetables, flowers, and spices. Examples: Banana (Tamil Nadu), Tomato (Andhra Pradesh).
Major crops provide food, raw materials to industries, employment, and help in earning foreign exchange through exports.
Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
