🇩🇪 The Making of Germany with the Prussian Army
Before 1871, Germany was divided into 39 independent states. The two most powerful were:
- Prussia – Militarily strong, industrialized, and led by Otto von Bismarck.
- Austria – A multi-ethnic empire controlling German-speaking regions.
🔹 1. Otto von Bismarck and the Role of Prussia
- Otto von Bismarck was the Prime Minister of Prussia (1862–1890).
- He believed in the policy of "Blood and Iron" – using war and diplomacy to unify Germany.
- His goal was to build a unified German Empire under Prussian leadership, excluding Austria.
- He strengthened the Prussian army and used military victories to achieve unification.
🔹 2. Wars that Led to German Unification
⚔️ The Danish War (1864)
- Allies: Prussia + Austria vs. Denmark
- Cause: Denmark tried to annex Schleswig and Holstein – German-speaking territories.
- Result:
- Prussia took Schleswig
- Austria took Holstein
⚔️ The Austro-Prussian War (1866)
(Also called the "Seven Weeks’ War")
- Cause: Prussia wanted to remove Austria’s influence from German affairs.
- Event: Prussia used superior military tactics and defeated Austria quickly.
- Result:
- Austria was excluded from German unification.
- Prussia took control of northern German states.
- The North German Confederation was formed in 1867 under Prussian leadership.
⚔️ The Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871)
- Cause: Bismarck provoked France (under Napoleon III) into war by editing the Ems Dispatch (a diplomatic message).
- Event:
- The Prussian army defeated France in a few months.
- Napoleon III was captured at the Battle of Sedan (1870).
- Paris was besieged and surrendered in January 1871.
- Result:
- France lost Alsace-Lorraine to Germany.
- This defeat created deep resentment and future conflict (especially in World War I).
👑 The Proclamation of the German Empire (1871)

- On 18 January 1871, the German Empire was proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors, at the Palace of Versailles, France.
- King Wilhelm I of Prussia was declared Kaiser (Emperor) of Germany.
- This was a symbolic humiliation for France, as it took place in the palace of French kings.
