Key Features of Democracy
Here are four important features of democracy:
1. Major Decisions by Elected Leaders
- Definition: In a democracy, the leaders who are elected by the people make the important decisions for the country.
- Example: In India, the Prime Minister is elected by the people. Once elected, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet make major decisions, such as economic policies or education reforms, based on what they believe is best for the country.
2. Free and Fair Electoral Competition
- Definition: Elections must be conducted in a way that allows all candidates to compete fairly, giving voters a genuine choice.
- Example: In the United States, elections for Congress and the President allow multiple parties to participate. Each party campaigns freely, and voters can choose their preferred candidate without fear of intimidation or bias.
3. One Person, One Vote, One Value
- Definition: Every citizen's vote has equal value, meaning that each person gets one vote, and all votes are counted equally.
- Example: In South Africa, after the end of apartheid, all citizens, regardless of race, have the right to vote. This means that every South African adult's vote counts the same when electing leaders, ensuring equality in the electoral process.
4. Rule of Law and Respect for Rights
- Definition: The law applies to everyone equally, and the government must respect the rights of all citizens, including minorities.
- Example: In Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees individual rights and freedoms to all citizens. Even if a majority wants to change a law, the government must still respect these rights and follow legal procedures.
These features ensure that democracy works effectively and that the government remains accountable to the people. Understanding these principles helps us recognize the importance of democratic values in our society.
Examples of working or denial of democracy
| Statement | Matched Feature | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| King of Bhutan has declared that in future he will be guided by the advice given to him by elected representatives. | e. Major decisions by elected leaders | This statement indicates that the king will rely on the advice of those who have been elected, which aligns with the feature where major decisions are made by elected leaders. |
| Many Tamil workers who migrated from India were not given a right to vote in Sri Lanka. | c. One person one vote one value | The denial of voting rights to Tamil workers contradicts the principle that everyone should have equal voting rights, which is fundamental to the feature of "one person, one vote, one value." |
| The king imposed a ban on political gatherings, demonstrations, and rallies. | b. Respect for Rights | Imposing a ban on political gatherings infringes upon the rights of citizens to express their opinions and participate in democratic processes, thus violating the feature of respect for rights. |
| The Indian Supreme Court held that the dissolution of Bihar assembly was unconstitutional. | a. Rule of law | The Supreme Court's decision emphasizes that all actions, including those of the government, must adhere to the law, demonstrating the principle of rule of law in a democracy. |
| Political parties in Bangladesh have agreed that a neutral government should rule the country at the time of elections. | d. Free and fair electoral competition | The agreement for a neutral government during elections indicates a commitment to ensuring that elections are conducted fairly and without bias, which is essential for free and fair electoral competition. |
